Hey, I’m glad you found your way to my website. Welcome. I am an urban planner specializing in urban design and neighborhood planning. I grew up in New Orleans and Auckland, New Zealand and I’ve developed some special attitudes about towns and cities and how they should be planned. First of all, I don’t really believe in planning at all. Let me explain: it seems to me a large part of the reason the world is in the bad shape it’s in is because of planners. They’re all well intentioned, of course, but the empirical evidence is that when they’ve been in charge, they’ve screwed things up. There are exceptions. I could go on in detail but I recommend you read Jane Jacobs, The Death and Life of Great American Cities”, William H. Whyte’s "The Last Landscape" and Stuart Brand’s “How Buildings Learn”. I have a whole list of books to read (see my Library). Anyway, read these books and you’ll agree with me that planners don’t have a great track record. So, what am I doing practicing planning as my chosen profession? Well, I’m set on changing things. I think I can change the way we plan this planet and make it a better place for everyone. (See my Diatribe.) The way I see planning is from a holistic, humanistic and common sense perspective. That is, I approach planning problems in behalf of people—and without the burden of a preconceived ideology. I solve problems for people using common sense. And I consider the “whole ball of wax”. Essentially, planning is simple; it is like a three legged stool.......... |
